How to make sense of your feelings after an argument

After conflict it is easy to swing between fixing everything immediately and avoiding the topic completely. Start by separating the event from the meaning you attached to it.

A small step now

A short conflict debrief

  1. Describe only observable words and actions.
  2. Name one to three emotions and rate their intensity.
  3. Ask what mattered to you: respect, closeness, safety, clarity, freedom, or support?

Event and interpretation are different

A painful comment can quickly become a global conclusion such as “I am not valued”. The conclusion matters, but it is not automatically a verified fact.

Prepare for the next conversation

  • Refer to one specific episode.
  • Describe your state and need.
  • Make one realistic request.
  • Leave room for the other person’s perspective.

When a pause is useful

If both people are highly activated, a pause can protect the conversation. Agree on when to return to the topic when possible.

If the relationship is unsafe

When there are threats, coercive control, physical or sexual violence, prioritize safety and seek appropriate professional or emergency support.
